Deadly Collision Involving Police Pursuit
Four Victims, Including Grandparents and Infant, Killed
Emergency services responded to a deadly crash on Highway 401 in Whitby on April 29, 2024. The incident involved multiple vehicles and resulted in the closure of a stretch of the highway in both directions. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
According to the SIU, two grandparents and their infant grandchild were among the four fatalities. The crash occurred after a police pursuit involving a wrong-way driver. The SIU is mandated to investigate all incidents involving serious injury or death that result from police actions.
The SIU is currently conducting witness interviews and gathering evidence in order to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. The stretch of Highway 401 that was closed has since reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling in the area.
