RSL Storylines: “Actions, Not Words,” and Greater Execution All Key Against Dallas

A concerning lack of execution in the final third has been a major point of emphasis for Real Salt Lake in recent weeks.

With a vital Western Conference match against FC Dallas looming on Saturday night, head coach Pablo Mastroeni addressed the need for improvement in that area, especially after dropping points in a 0-0 home draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps last weekend.

“It’s certainly something that we need to address. We can say a lot of things, but we have to bring it to the field and back it up,” said Mastroeni.

RSL had no shortage of chances against Vancouver, but the team failed to capitalize on several promising opportunities.

The Claret-and-Cobalt had the better of the match statistically, but couldn’t find the necessary execution to earn all three points. Mastroeni acknowledged that the team needs to be more clinical in front of goal, especially against a stingy Dallas defense that has allowed just 17 goals in 16 matches this season.

Damir Kreilach has scored six goals this season, but missed a wide-open header in the first half and then hit the post in the second half against Vancouver. Justin Meram missed a golden chance in the dying minutes of the match, shooting just wide of the far post from close range.

The team has also missed the services of Rubio Rubin, who is still working his way back from injury. Rubin will be out for Saturday’s match against Dallas.
